International Safe Abortion Day marked
Actress Cherie Coco joined in commemoration of International Safe Abortion Day at Undugu Society Social Hall in Nairobi. The edutainment event advocated safe abortion practices. “If diseases like heart attacks are allowed, why should safe abortion be a big issue? We are losing so many lives to unsafe abortions,” said Coco. The commemoration come hot on the heels of a High Court ruling on June 2, which reinstated the 2012 safe abortion Standards and Guidelines. It is estimated that 2,600 women die from unsafe abortion in Kenya every year. Coco was joined by reproductive health experts like Dr Ernest Nyamato, Director Ipas Africa Alliance, Dr Simon Mwangi, Jolly Mukangi of Reproductive Health Services and Dr Alice Kaaria.
